My brother is expecting a baby girl in a few months. I would love to give her a handmade baby cradle. As an aunt, I have great joy in seeing the gifts I have given being treasured by my nieces and nephews. In watching them grow, I have learned that the toys purchased are routinely tossed aside as new ones come along.

Certain gifts from my heart, however, have been treasured by these young children. In particular, the baby blankets I hand selected have always been loved and dragged along throughout their days and cuddled at night. Items such as these that have given them great comfort in their most peaceful moments of sleep are the ones for which I most hope to be remembered.

Had I known before, a handmade cradle would have been the first gift I would have given to my first niece. Baby cradles have a romantic, old-fashioned charm. Their rocking motion is soothing and usually puts baby to sleep quickly. There are numerous choices of styles to fit any decor or nursery motif. There is a variety of beautiful hardwoods from which to choose and would form a solid and safe sleeping environment that would stand the test of time for generations of babies.

Hopefully one day I will have a child of my own and my child could sleep in the baby cradle that their cousin was once quietly rocked to sleep as a baby. The cradle that their own aunts and uncles stood over watching as their baby slept quietly in the night would be priceless.

A baby cradle is such a sacred thing to any new parent and child. Providing my brother and his new baby girl with a handmade baby cradle that they can cherish will be a symbol of my love for him and his family. Perhaps this cradle will be the beginning of a family heirloom and can be passed down from one new parent to another within my family. Each new child will know that they are loved unconditionally by me and all of those who came before him.

A child's early years will shape him for the rest of his life. I can only hope that the lives of the children in my life will be shaped by a baby cradle that is unique, one of a kind and made with love because each child is unique, one of a kind and made with love.
